Annabelle, Queen in waiting

This is our newest piggy. She is a teeny tiny baby girl.  When she was only 4 hours old, her momma got upset by visitors looking at her babies and accidentally stepped on Annabelle. She squealed but stood by her mom.  Four hours later, we went to check on her and she was being ran over by all of her siblings. She wasn't moving much.  We thought she was the "runt" (which we later found out that she wasn't) and just wasn't big enough to fight her siblings for food, so we took her to try to help her.  We fed her and kept her warm for about 6 hours until she started squealing and trying to get out of the blanket.  We decided to try to put her back with her momma (we know that is the best place for a piglet to be!) since she was fiesty and seemed to feel better.  We assumed she had rested and gotten her tummy full enough that she would have the strength to stick up to her siblings and get her food. We went to check in on her 4 hours later and she was laying by her momma's head and not moving while her siblings were nursing.  We grabbed her up and wrapped her in warm blankets and made her eat every 2 hours.  She slept the entire day, only waking up when we made her so she could eat.  The following day she was feeling much better and was fiesty again so we put her down to run on the floor.  Thats when we realized that she had a broken leg. We took her to the vet immediately.  The x-ray showed the break very clearly.  The vet explained that it was too far up by her shoulder to brace it but that since she was so young it would heal quickly but she would always limp.  He also told us that being so young that her chance of survival was only 50-50 and that was without a broken leg!  So we brought Baby Annabelle home to rest and eat.  We kept her as calm as possible, keeping her in a heated blanket and waking her up to feed her every 2 hours.  She is 3 weeks old in this photo and you would never be able to tell that she had been through such trama in her first hours of life. She is healthy and thriving, does not limp at all, and she LOVES to play tag with us!
